So part of the fun I have with dolls is the ability to remove their factory face and give them a new one. Sometimes though, they come blank. In that case it's just building a character around the face. Mostly I let the doll come to life on it's own. A natural growth from the blank head to a personality.
Or it can begin with a concept art.

Take the tiny Picco Neemo doll I got. I had originally intended to use a Disney Fairy head on her but it was too large for such a small body. Bobble head large. But it began life as a concept art I drew. A half-Goblin girl finding her way in the world. From there the Disney head seemed a natural fit. Sadly it didn't work out.
Then I bought a 11.5 Obitsu/Parabox Petite Fairy Head in White. I decided on the head with the insert eyes and need for a wig. That way I could change her look as needed and her expression a little.
Now Heather might not have turned out the way I thought she would but I couldn't be happier for that. The head she ended up with has a soft, innocent expression. A good thing since she can be a bit of an imp at times.
Creativity comes in different ways. Sometimes it's a fully realized idea that blooms into a complete project. But other times it's a bit of happy accidents that turn out better than you intended. The trick is to go with the flow.
Enjoy.
